I found lifestyle studios by accident. A clothing brand client wanted product shots that looked like they were taken in a real apartment. Not on a white sweep, not on a backdrop, but in a room that looked lived in. A bed with rumpled linen. A kitchen counter with a coffee mug. That kind of thing.

I started pricing out furniture rentals and quickly got to £600 before I had even thought about where to put it all. Then a friend who shoots interiors told me to just book a lifestyle studio. She sent me a link, I paid £350 for a half day, and the set looked better than anything I could have assembled because someone who actually cares about interior design had put it together. That was about two years ago and I have not built a set from scratch since.

What a lifestyle studio actually is

A lifestyle studio is a space designed to look like a real room. A bedroom, a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom. The furniture is real. The props are styled. The walls are painted specific colours. There are plants, cushions, books, candles. The whole thing is set up so that when you point a camera at it, the image looks like it was shot in someone's tastefully decorated flat.

It is not a flat. It is a studio with good lighting access, usually high ceilings hidden above the set walls, and power outlets in places a real apartment would never have them. The "apartment" typically ends about a metre past what the camera can see. Step behind the sofa and you are back in a warehouse.

Most lifestyle studios offer several "rooms" in one space. A popular setup in London might have a bedroom corner, a living room set, and a kitchen area, all within the same open floor plan, separated by movable walls or just camera angles. You are renting the illusion, not the architecture.

When a lifestyle studio beats building your own set

If you need more than one styled room, a lifestyle studio wins on cost almost every time. Renting furniture for a single room set costs me £200 to £400 depending on what the brief asks for. Add delivery, collection, a day of my time arranging it all, and the inevitable moment when something does not look right and I need a different cushion. A lifestyle studio that already has four rooms styled and ready to shoot costs about the same as renting furniture for one.

Where it makes less sense is when you need a very specific look that no existing studio matches. If the brief asks for a 1970s kitchen or an all-black minimalist bedroom, you are unlikely to find that pre-built. In those cases I still build, or I modify an existing studio set with my own props, which most studios allow if you put everything back afterwards.

The other time I skip lifestyle studios is for product-only shots. If the product sits on a surface and the background is blurred beyond recognition, I do not need a styled room. A simple tabletop and a piece of marble tile from a hardware shop does the job for about £12. What to check before you book

Listing photos lie. Not on purpose, usually, but they show the set at its best, freshly styled, with professional lighting and a carefully chosen angle. By the time you book, the cushions have been sat on by forty photographers, the fake plants are dusty, and the throw blanket has a stain nobody noticed.

I ask for photos taken within the last month. Not the hero shots from the listing, but phone photos. The studios that care about their sets will have recent ones. The ones that do not care will send you the same images from two years ago and hope you do not notice.

Check how often the set gets restyled. Good lifestyle studios refresh their sets every few months. They swap out cushions, repaint accent walls, change the bedding. This keeps the look current and means your images will not look identical to every other shoot done in that space. Some studios post their restyle dates on their listings. If they do not, ask.

Natural light timing matters more here than in a traditional studio. A lifestyle set is designed around its windows, and the light quality shifts dramatically across the day. Morning shoots get soft directional light. Midday can be harsh and flat. Late afternoon brings warmth but also long shadows across the set. I prefer morning bookings for lifestyle work and I am always disappointed when I have to take an afternoon slot. Ask the studio which direction the windows face so you can plan around the sun.

The problems nobody warns you about

The rooms are smaller than they look. That living room in the listing photo was shot on a 16mm lens from the corner of the room. In reality the sofa is 1.5 metres from the far wall. This matters because you need space for the camera, for lighting that is not in frame, and for yourself. I have shot in lifestyle sets where I was physically pressed against the back wall to get the framing I needed, and it is not a good way to work.

Props go missing or break between bookings. The ceramic vase that looked perfect on the listing might not be there when you arrive. Studios do their best but small items walk off or get knocked over. Bring a few of your own props as backup. I carry a small bag with a couple of books, a candle, a linen napkin, and a plant. Enough to fill a gap if something is missing from the set.

Other people's styling choices are not always your client's taste. The studio might be styled Scandinavian minimal and your client wants maximalist bohemian. There is no way to restyle a lifestyle studio in an hour. Know what the set looks like before you promise anything to the client. The honest take

Lifestyle studios fixed a problem I was spending too much time and money solving myself. I am not an interior designer. My sets looked acceptable but never great, and they took half a day to build. Paying someone who does this for a living to have the set ready when I walk in is the better division of labour and it shows in the work.

That said, I have also booked lifestyle studios that were a let down. Tired sets, missing props, listing photos from a different era. The quality range is wider than traditional studios because so much depends on how recently someone bothered to restyle the space. Do your homework before you book and you will mostly avoid the bad ones.

Major changes like repainting a wall or replacing the sofa are not happening, and you need to know that before money changes hands.
